Vivaldi's Muse
5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Characterization..., October 23, 2011
Vivaldi's Muse Stirred My Heart!! I enjoyed my quiet time with Antonio, Annina and the people of Venice. I LOVE Magical Venice and I felt like I was there. Sarah Kelly did a Brilliant Characterization of a spirited young woman standing up for what she believes in amidst weak manipulative characters. I've recommended this glorious retreat to others and I look forward to reading Sarah Kelly's non-fiction version of Vivaldi.
5.0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Musical and Dramatic Journey, October 19, 2011
By
Maria Benito, New York
I picked up this book after hearing about it through a friend. I'd read Sarah Bruce Kelly's previous novels, both of which were for young adults, but excellent. This one is by far her best so far, and is definitely not young adult. It's a good thing I started reading on a Friday, because I didn't want to put it down.
Although the story is written from several points of view, Annina Giro, "Vivaldi's Muse," is clearly the central character. The book begins with a mysterious scene involving Annina as a grown woman conversing with a little boy, then flashes back to when she was a very young girl and first encounters the alluring "prete rosso," Vivaldi. From there be prepared for a journey filled with drama and intrigue that continues for the next 20 or so years, bringing us back to the scene with the little boy--and then beyond. Along the way we encounter many fascinating characters and descriptions so vivid you feel you are part of the story. I don't want to say much more for fear of giving too much away. All I'll say is I wish more books like this would be written. It made for a very enjoyable weekend of reading!
5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Music Scholars!, January 11, 2012
By Scotland4Ever
Not being a music scholar, I was worried that the book would be of little interest to me. How wrong I was! This is a story of friendship, love, intrigue and overcoming difficult circumstances. Having been to Venice several times, I loved the descriptioins of that beautiful place. The story brought to life a city that heretofore was just a lovely tourist destination. If I ever have the chance to go again, I know I will see it in an entirely different light and think of Annina and Vivaldi at every turn. Thank you, Ms. Kelly, for bringing this story to light. I could not have enjoyed it more.
5.0 out of 5 stars I love it, October 23, 2011
I feel in love with the story and characters. Vivaldi's sensitivity and genius were perfect complements to Annina's impressionable warmth and vivacious ambition. The story brought me into their lives and I left feeling like I knew them.
5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, January 23, 2012
What a delight it was reading "Vivaldi's Muse". Sarah Kelly truly has a way of bringing the characters from the past to life, and making them so real and intriguing. I can tell that this is a book I will read again and again. Having already read "The Red Priest's Annina" and also "Jazz Girl" I had very high expectations for "Vivaldi's Muse", and they were met and exceeded. You will love this book!

The Red Priest's Annina
by Sarah Bruce Kelly

a tender and musical novel about a young singer and her mentor, September 12, 2009
I am fascinated by the great composer/priest Vivaldi and the school of orphan girls in Venice for whom he wrote some of his greatest music. Readers have been fortunate to have two Vivaldi novels published in the past few years, both quite different. THE RED PRIEST's ANNINA adds a third, unique in its particularly tender relationship between the frightened young girl who wants to sing and the fatherly, kindly but exacting Vivaldi who takes her under his protection and begins to teach her. A principled man devoted to his work, he wants only to guide her young career, but she perhaps feels something more than daughterly to him. The novel is based on the complex and still mysterious relationship with the great composer/priest of nearly three hundred years ago and his talented singer Anna Giro. A lovely book!
I am the author of MARRYING MOZART (Penguin) and CLAUDE & CAMILLE: A NOVEL OF MONET (pub date April, 2010).

Oustanding Historical Novel, June 25, 2009
| By Annette B. Gates |
(Richmond, Virginia) |
I just finished "The Red Priest's Annina" and I must say I absolutely loved it! It was an easy read, but I learned so much about this fascinating period of history, about the ancient city of Venice, and about Vivaldi's music. I had my iTunes playing some of the pieces mentioned in the book while I was reading! Although I'm in my fifties, I think pre-teen and teenage readers would really enjoy this. It's educational, the writing is excellent, and it discusses some difficult topics that any youngster can relate to, but in a G-rated format. Historical fiction lovers, Vivaldi lovers, and romance lovers will love this book.

Book Mom (Raleigh, NC) |
I am a mom of teen and preteen girls and have been searching for books (not too successfully) that we can enjoy and talk about together as a family. "The Red Priest's Annina' has turned out to be such a book. My daughters and I were absolutely enthralled by the storyline, and we haven't stopped talking about all the fascinating things we've learned from this wonderful novel. Annina tells her own story in such a lively and vivid way it's almost like watching a movie, which really appealed to my girls. Annina's story has also really sparked their interest in Vivaldi, and they've been begging me to buy CDs of his music!
My daughters and I were thrilled to see that this talented new author has two more books coming out soon. We can hardly wait!
Intriguing Historical Novel, July 24, 2009
"The Red Priest's Annina" tells the little-known story of Annina Giro and her relationship with her famous teacher, Antonio Vivaldi. There have been elusive references to Giro in nearly every previous book written about Vivaldi, both fiction and non-fiction, but until now none have attempted to develop her character or explore her connection with Vivaldi to any extent.
The careful and thorough research that clearly went into writing this book comes through on every page but in no way takes away from the story's intrigue and readablility. The characters are fascinating and well-developed, the dialogue lively and absorbing, and the descriptions of early 18th-century Venetian life and culture are vivid and entertaining. Best of all is the touching story of Annina and the rough road she traveled to achieve her dreams.
Fun to read and I learned a lot too, July 23, 2009
I'm 16 and love to read historical novels and this is the best one I've read all summer. I stayed up really late reading this book because it's fun and I couldn't put it down. I was also surprised how much I learned about life in Italy hundreds of years ago. It all felt so real. The best thing is that this story is about real people and things that really happened. If you like history and a good story you will love this book. Annina is a cool kid, and Vivaldi rocks!
Fabulous historical novel, July 23, 2009
At last, a novel about Vivaldi that does not resort to boring narrative or raunchy sensationalism. The meticulous research that obviously went into this book is woven richly and seamlessly throughout this touching story of a young girl's determination to rise above her difficult circumstances and painful past to achieve her dream. One of my favorite aspects of the book is how Vivaldi is such a fully developed character and integral to the plot, rather than just a shadowy or eccentric background figure as he has been in other such novels. "The Red Priest's Annina" is an exciting, intriguing read that rings true on every page. I had a hard time putting this book down.
A beautiful book, delightful to the senses, July 14, 2009
A wonderful book, beautifully written and safe for preteens and early teens. Ms. Kelly's extensive research shows in every sentence without making the story dry and rustly. The characters are lively without being forced; their conversations are "true to ear". The settings in Venice, the opera, Annina's living quarters, become real under Kelly's magic. Although I enjoy Vivaldi's music, I never really searched out information about him or the era in which he lived. This book has opened new doors for me and excited my interest in Vivaldi, opera, and a wonderful new writer!
Informative and entertaining, July 8, 2009
I thoroughly enjoyed reading "The Red Priest's Annina". Through the eyes of Annina I could picture the early 1700's in Venice and the tremendous trials and tribulations of a young girl so far from home and in a very different and difficult environment. Her love of opera and determination to train with Antonio Vivaldi drove her to meet her challenges head on and to learn from her successes and her failures. I learned more about Vivaldi and this era and culture than I had previously known; and, it was presented in an easy-to-read and entertaining format. Thank you Sarah Kelly. I look forward to reading your future works.

This is fantastic!, July 14, 2009
I stumbled on my daughter's copy of this book and the cover caught my attention, so I picked it up and was immediately pulled into the story. The story and characters kept me totally interested in the development of this young girl's desire to establish, start, and achieve her goals. I suggest all young people read this to see where a dream mixed with determination will take them.
Outstanding!, July 29, 2009
Sarah Bruce Kelly surely knows how to spin a tale! She can keep the reader intrigued throughout the book until the end. Her descriptive style captures the audience's imagination and transposes it in place and time. Her knowledge of old Venice is a learning experience for all. I truly recommend!
A Real Treat, July 29, 2009
BRAVO and BELLISSIMA!! What a real treat. I enjoyed every morsel. It was an easy read and would be perfect for anyone interested in the culture of Italy during that era, musical history, Vivaldi, or just a wonderful novel of determination and the perseverence. The author clearly did her research, but the story line is delivered with such grace and easy that you do not realize you are having a musical history lesson. A fun read for adults and a delightful read most appropriate for the teen or music student. A perfect gift for romance novel and music lovers. Thank you Ms Kelly. Please bring us more. I can't wait!

I really enjoyed this book and would certainly recommend it to anyone who can appreciate an intellectual, historical and personal piece. Mrs. Kelly has a passionate and eloquent writing style that will enthrall you. The book has an emotional and thoughtful perspective that gives true insight to the time period as well as the feelings of a young singer. The characters are well-rounded with intense and distinct personalities. I will definitely read it often and hope that others will too.

Simply Captivating, August 17, 2009
Writing and music are two entirely different gifts, yet when intertwined, produce a masterpiece of much depth and beauty. Sarah Bruce Kelly possesses both talents and artistry. This book, The Red Priest's Annina, her masterpiece, will unmistakably take one to all the places and emotions described on every scene. It takes into account the roller coaster feelings of the budding Annina -- as experienced by most young girls -- and the maturity and grace this main character learns as life goes on. Overall, it is well-written and firmly grounded on historical facts. |

Historical fiction done well, September 9, 2009
Any contemporary teen who longs to follow her dream can relate to this story. The sad absence of a beloved parent who fostered Annina's love of opera and the subsequent dream in her heart, tight family economics, and difficult choices begin an enthralling story that transports the reader back in time. Set in 18th century Italy where royalty holds sway over the arts and provides valuable patrons willing and eager to sponsor new talent. Through Ms Kelly's dynamic writing the reader sees and hears the excitement that the city of Venice provides for a young girl from a small town. The reader shares the heartache and loneliness of Annina as she matches her strong will against the cultural customs of her day and mean spirited people who would see her fail or take advantage of her youth and inexperience. Historically accurate, the romance of this story is not of the flesh, but of the journey to fulfill a young girl's dream to create beautiful music. With a smattering of Italian language, 18th century Venetian history and an introductuion to the operatic composer Vivaldi (the Red Priest), this is an excellent book for teens and young adults.
The Red Priest's Anina, September 5, 2009
BRAVO! I was completely transported to old time Venice and into the mind of this wonderful Annina. A very quick read full of the sights, sounds and smells of the old city. You could hear the music and walk into the lives of the young and hopeful opera singers. It made me turn on the Vivaldi CD and want to return to Venice! You don't even realize you are being educated while enveloped in the story. A read for anyone, any age! again Encore, Bravo!!!

A True Treasure, September 4, 2009
The Red Priest's Annina is an easy read, and a good thing, as you don't want to put it down! I found myself snuggled on the sofa on a dreary Sunday afternoon, being taken back to the beautiful streets and canals of Venice. The next thing I knew, it was dark and I had turned the last page. I love history and I especially loved the way Ms. Kelly brought the non-fictional characters of Vivaldi and Annina to life in her historical novel. The detailed research that was obvious throughout the book was only surpassed by her clever weaving of the characters into the history. Bravo!

"The silence of la moretta will shield you.", September 15, 2009
The Red Priest's Annina written by Sarah Bruce Kelly transports you to 17th century Venice through the eyes of a young girl, Annina Giro. Sarah, through her masterful writing, creates a Venice that we will never see - all its grandeur, mystery, and intrigue. Sarah tells a story of the struggles of a naive young girl who has a dream - to study with the great impressario Vivaldi. The book is an inspiration to all women, young and old, to follow a dream no matter what roadblocks are put in their way. I look forward to reading her new books and impatiently await their publication.

This book should be mandatory reading in all schools - especially for young ladies who love music. Anyone who is a fan of Vivaldi's opera's and compositions will feel at moments as though they are in the room with him while he is capturing his gift and delivering his emotions onto paper! I'm a slow reader and once Annina arrives in Venice I finished the book in a few days! In fact, I rushed home to finish this wonderful adventure and I look forward to reading more about the life of Annina - especially her connection with the stories of the other youth who were encouraged through the honest and determined coaching of Father Vivaldi!

This review is from: Jazz Girl: a Novel of Mary Lou Williams and Her Early Life (Paperback)
Since birth, Mary Lou Williams has been marked with the "sign of the caul," an African-American tradition that suggests she has a "second sight" which allows her to see ghosts and spirits and gives her an amazing musical ability.
Although she loves playing her music, her mother doesn't approve of it and her neighbors shun and belittle her for it. Torn between her love of music and fitting in, Mary has trouble choosing.
Will she be able to soar above her problems and learn to express herself?
A well-researched, well-woven story based on Mary Lou Williams and her life. The characters seem true to history. The story is eye-opening to those who don't know much about this talented woman and her early life. Readers who like non-fiction, jazz, and fictionalized biographies will enjoy reading JAZZ GIRL.

I just read your book today, cover to cover, and I feel like I've experienced a very sad soul and historical musician! I could not put it down. I felt transformed from my world into Mary Lou's, and had to jump online to acquaint myself afresh with her music - thanks for the link at the end! Her persistance to overcome her circumstances, or to allow them to be delivered through her music, was brilliantly portrayed in your book, and I found myself wanting to protect her and encourage her, and to quickly dress her wounds. Her suffering brings much validity to the soul of her music. Thanks for taking me into a world unknown to appreciate life and love. Your different style is an attribute to your talent. Bravo!!

This is the second book I have read by Sarah Bruce Kelly and I loved this one too. I felt compelled to read it all the way through with few breaks because I wanted to know more and more about Mary's trials and tribulations. While she had more trials and sadness than most, she perservered with a strong will and devotion to her music. And, when I was done, I wanted to read more and for the story to go on for this brilliant pianist. Sarah, thank you so much. Keep the stories coming!

This review is from: Jazz Girl: a Novel of Mary Lou Williams and Her Early Life
I love to read encouraging stories that propel a character from a place of misfortune or difficult background to a far loftier presence in life, and this was a tale of overcoming adversity. This story brought me back to a memorable experience from my past. My family was traveling by vehicle from California to NC, stopping for dinner in a restaurant in Alabama. I'll never forget my mother guiding my sister and me down a long corridor toward the ladies' room and seeing three doors from which to choose--Men, Ladies, and Colored. I vividly recall thinking that this arrangement was ludicrous treatment of innocent people, and I was only a ten year old. Jazz Girl expresses the feelings and experiences of Mary Lou Williams, growing up as a Black, musically gifted child who was persecuted not only by other children, but also by her own family. This book held my interest from page one through the last written word, and is a wonderful example of how someone who experienced a grueling upbringing can rise above, move forward, and excel! Thank you to Sarah Bruce Kelly for capturing a peek into the life and struggles of this talented, ambitious lady.
